Clarification

Okay, I realized there wasn't much context for that last post, but I've now got a link for those of you who want to investiage it. Of course I'm sorry to hear about his surgery, but I just can't stand the message of the new book. So check out http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/02/23/pope.book.reut/.

Winding up a frenzied week today. Hoping that I'll get more work done over the weekend on the dissertation. Currently reading Balzac's _Peau de Chagrin_ (trans. by Penguin as _The Wild Ass's Skin_--horrible, I know). Also eating some edamame. Now I'm off to see Emily in the LGBT Resource Center.

Also, send a shout out to the ever-brilliant Mr. Govern. Enjoy the Windy City!! Save most of your debauchery for your return to cville (rather than for Boystown)!!

the printer's control

Waiting for the printer to shoot out a series of articles from different periodicals that I wanted to read, I'm stuck here in the Bryan Hall computer lab, even though I made a deal with myself that I wouldn't come to grounds today. Hopefully I'll look over these articles at some point. Meanwhile, I can be outraged by the fact that it takes the UVa network laserjet so fucking long to print out a few pdfs.

The weekend was pretty boring, though I did go to the gym and finally watch "School of Rock," which, sadly, I had not yet seen. I also finished a draft of the first chapter of my dissertation on Friday. 57 pages! Yeah!

On other fronts, a big debate has sprung up around the UC Boulder professor Ward Churchill on the English department list. After having a relatively tense debate with a colleague the other day, I'm pretty fired up about the recent discussions of "academic freedom," especially in context of the ridiculous editorial about the university and the left that ran in last weeks WSJ. I'll probably be blogging more about this in a few days.

Finally, I read in the NYT yesterday that Tilda Swinton will be playing the angel Gabriel in the upcoming Keanu vehicle _Constantine_. While the movie looks like crap, Tilda's interview was cool. She's my hero!
